Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was a mathematical prodigy whose ability to calculate far surpassed that of his classmates (and even his teachers) at a very young age. His later work in mathematics, astronomy, physics, and geodesy made him one of the most important scientists of the 19th century.
