Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was an exceptionally versatile and tireless scholar who set new standards in nearly all fields of knowledge – from mathematics and philosophy to law. In 1673, he presented his calculating machine in London, which for the first time offered a mechanical solution for all four basic arithmetic operations.
